A Rodin sculpture was sold for $20.4 million at a auction of Sotheby’s, establishing a record for a Rodin sculpture. The last record was reached in February with”Iris, the Messenger of Gods” sold for $ 16.6 million, which previously was owned by the actor Sylvester Stallone.
The sculpture was made of only one block of marble and was modelled during the sculptor’s intense period of creation. It depicts two lovers embraced, the male has a dominant position and the female was based on Torso of Adèle, an earlier sculpture of Rodin.
It was created between 1901 and 1903, according to art experts. The sculpture is just 80 cm wide and 66.7 tall (31.5 x 26.25 inches). It was first conceived to be part of “Gate of the Hell”, but Rodin decided the motif was to happy for it.
